When we turn the page from Malachi to Matthew, it is helpful to remember that roughly 450 years have taken place. These were centuries in which the Lord made Israel and the nations wait and prepare for the coming of the promised Messiah. There were no new Scriptures during these years. The Old Testament, however, spoke to these waiting generations. It called Israel and the nations to repentance and to wait for the fulfillment of the prophecies. The Scriptures were copied and translated, and the godly attended to their truths. Scribes and doctors of the law studied the deposit of God’s Word and in synagogues throughout the Mediterranean world, God’s Word was read and taught.
