GENESIS 22 God tests Abraham and provides a lamb to die in Isaac’s place..

📌 What is your “Isaac”? What earthly relationship or possession do you treasure most? If obedience to God required you to let go of it, do you fear Him enough to make the sacrifice? Pray for grace to show the Lord that this too is His.

📌 God made the highest sacrifice. The covenant people of God deserve eternal death in hell. To provide a substitute to take their place, God did not spare His own Son, His only begotten Son whom He loves. Christ Himself became the Lamb of God’s provision. So trust in His redeeming love; trust that if God gave His Son for us, He will certainly provide us with all that is good for us.

MATTHEW 21 Jesus again predicts His death and prepares Himself and His disciples for His upcoming death and resurrection.

📌 Christ came riding into Jerusalem as a glorious, yet meek and lowly King, as prophesied by Zechariah. Sinners need such a Savior! Just as He came to Jerusalem, so He comes in the preaching of the gospel. Do we come to hear the Word, praying, “Hosanna,” that is, “Lord, please save us”?

📌 The fig tree with beautiful leaves, but no fruit, represents hypocritical religion among any professing people of God. The hypocrite loves to make himself or herself look nice to the outside world. However, when God comes to pluck the fruits of true repentance, there are none. For all the hypocrite’s fine words to the Lord, he remains disobedient. Far better to confess our sinfulness to the Lord with honesty, and then repent and turn to obedience with sincerity. What can we learn from the publicans and harlots, of whom Christ said, they “go into the kingdom of God” before many other religious people (Matt. 21:31)?

NEHAMIAH 11 The leaders of Jerusalem are listed and the cities that lay outside of Jerusalem.

📌 Here one-tenth of the people of God lived in Jerusalem. This was a special “tithe,” consecrated to the Lord to sustain His holy city. Through Zechariah, God envisioned a time when everywhere, not just one city, would be called holy (Zech. 14:20-21). This is true in Christ. There is no longer one city where God has His presence in a particular way (John 4:21-24). The “city of God” touches believers throughout this world, and is found in its glory in heaven (Heb. 12:22-24). Praise God for the hope we have of His glory to be revealed one day!

📌 What a note of joy there is in this verse: “And the residue of Israel, of the priests, and the Levites, were in all the cities of Judah, every one in his inheritance” (Neh. 11:20). After a long time of exile, these prodigals were back, each in their own inheritance. Have you returned to the Lord and the heritage of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob? This is a lifelong process, but it begins with turning to God and forsaking the world.

ACTS 21 With suffering looming, Paul arrives in Jerusalem, where in the temple precincts he is met with an uproar and is whisked away by a Roman military contingent, but not without first being allowed to address the people.

📌 What a beautiful prayer meeting on the shore (Acts 21:5). Do you think the children, at least the older ones, ever forgot kneeling there with the apostle Paul as he was heading to Jerusalem to suffer for the gospel’s sake? Why is it good to send off friends with prayer?

📌 Mnason of Cyprus, known as “an old disciple,” opened his house to Paul (Acts 21:16). What are the blessings of following Christ for a long time into old age? They must have enjoyed sweet fellowship in Mnason’s home. What blessings does it bring to show hospitality to traveling missionaries and pastors?

📌 As in the riot in Ephesus (Acts 19:29-41), the mob in Jerusalem was full of confusion (Acts 21:30-34), acting rashly in violence on the basis of false information (Acts 21:28-29). Why is it foolish to join an angry mob? What is a better alternative for addressing wrongs?

We live in an age of technological advancement and innovation. And one of the greatest blessings in the field of communication technology is the mobile phone. Because of its availability and practical usefulness, we can reach people anytime, anywhere and, in the same way, people can reach us whenever and wherever we are. In the urban centers of the great cities of the world, in a busy amusement park, or even in the remotest jungles of the Third World, we are able to connect with those we want to get in touch with, either in emergency situations or simply for conversational pleasure.

No doubt, the mobile phone is a boon. But have you wondered what things would be like if we treated our Bible in the same way we do our mobile phones? The following material gives us something to think about if we used our Bible the same way we use our cell phones.

What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets?
What if we flipped through it several times a day?
What if it were so important to us that we turned back to go get it if we forgot it?
What if we used it, not to receive text messages, but to receive messages from the sacred text?
What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it? (Matthew 4:4)
What if we gave it to young people as valued gifts?
What if we used it when we traveled?
What if we used it in case of emergency?
What if we consulted it often to find special guidance for each day?

Have we forgotten that prayer is the greatest wireless connection? And there are no dropped calls because "the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous and His ears are open unto their prayers" (1 Pet. 3:12). Also the Bible never loses its charge, because it’s power does not depend upon anything on earth. It is living and powerful, just like its Author (Heb. 4:12).

Don’t let the electronic age rob you of these wonderful spiritual realities!

Prayer of confession

All-seeing God,

We confess our sinful response to the trials and discomforts of our lives. While in the depths of woe, we have resented our need for you and rarely lifted our eyes to you, the only one who can bring us true help. Instead we have consistently directed our gaze to earthly things that falsely promise escape and comfort. We have been charmed by vain things: the approval of others; the possessions that we have or want; the allure of misused sexuality; and the enormous drive to worship our bodies, our abilities, and our desires above all things. In our willful blindness to the love and comfort you offer us, we are found completely guilty in your holy sight.

Yet as we continually stray from your love and your law, you look upon our helpless state and lead us to the cross. We ask you to do this now, Father. Thank you that Jesus looked perfectly to you in every single situation of his life, trusting you completely in all things. We are deeply grateful that Jesus never stopped trusting you, even when you did not allow the cup of condemnation that we deserve to pass from him. Jesus had to be lifted up on the cross because of our unwillingness to lift up our eyes to you. Yet Christ’s life and death on our behalf is the very comfort to which we are habitually so unwilling to look. Forgive us, Father, for our rejection of this beautiful gospel story into which you have invited us.

Loving God, soften our hearts to delight in your love for us. Change us into sons and daughters who are so enraptured with the story of the gospel that we run to our beautiful Savior as we experience suffering in our lives. Help us to trust you as you call us into journeys that we do not want to take, knowing that you will never leave us or forsake us. Give us strength to believe that from your own fullness you will repay all that you take from us. Lift our eyes afresh to the cross, from whence our help comes, the place where our lives were saved by Jesus’ death. In his name we come, amen.

What does Prayer Mean to You? Is it a Spare Wheel or your Steering Wheel?

After being king for several years, Saul finally built his first altar to God in 1 Samuel 14:35-36. But he did this only as a last resort. Throughout his reign, Saul consistently approached God only after he had tried everything else. How much better if Saul had gone to God first, building an altar as his first official act as king. God is too great to be an afterthought or someone we turn to as a last resort. When we turn to God first, we will never have to turn to him with fears and regrets as a last resort.

Do you have a prayer altar in your home? Do you take turning to God and seeking his face through the reading of his word and prayer first the first priority every morning before you begin your daily duties?

No Time to Pray?

I got up early one morning
and rushed right into the day;
I had so much to accomplish that
I didn't have time to pray.

Problems just tumbled about me,
and heavier came each task.
"Why doesn't God help me?" I wondered.
He answered, "You didn't ask."

I wanted to see joy and beauty,
but the day toiled on, grey and bleak;
I wondered why God didn't show me.

St. Francis de Sales once said, “Everyone of us needs half an hour of prayer each day, except when we are busy, then we need an hour.”

Did you take time to pray today?

Our Lord Jesus often spent time in prayer before beginning his daily duties. Speaking of Jesus, the Bible tells us in Mark 1:35 that "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." May God help us to emulate this example of our Lord Jesus.

Prayer:

Lord, we do not know how to pray. We do not even know what to pray for as we ought. But let your Spirit help our infirmities, and make intercession for us. Pour on us an abundance of the Spirit of grace and supplication that teaches us to cry, Abba, Father. Inspire our hearts to pray by the Spirit of our adoption and to be devoted to prayer in our lives.

Direct your light and truth of your word to come to us. Let them lead us to your throne of that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help us in the time of need. Let your light and your truth guide us to you. O Lord, our greatest joy enable us to trust in you with all our heart. We pray that you will not allow us to lean on our own understanding but will enable us to acknowledge you in all our ways. Help us not to be just hearers but doers of your word. Teach us how to pray and enable us to always give thanks to you in everything.

You have declared that you will be sanctified and glorified before all the world’s people by those who draw near to you. We, therefore, worship you, so that we may glorify your name. We call on you, that you may deliver us. Help us to give you the glory that is due you name because from you, and through you, and for your are all things. Amen.
