Authorship:
The Gospel According to Matthew does not explicitly credit the apostle Matthew with authorship. Some have questioned the long-standing tradition that Matthew is the author of this gospel bearing his name. Many contemporary scholars believe that this gospel is of a late composition and relies heavily on other sources. There is no good reason, however, to believe that this traditional accreditation of Matthew as the author is not accurate. Internal evidence also alludes to Matthew’s authorship, such as his use of the “tribute money” (see note at Matt. 22:19) and the story of Jesus and Peter paying the imperial tax (Matt. 17:24-27)—things well known to a tax collector.
